Assessment is key to program, student, and advisor development. Within the higher education community, the term assessment encompasses the process in which information is gathered, analyzed, and interpreted to improve overall quality, practice, and decision making. Assessment in higher education in general, and in advising specifically, is the creation of a formal, intentional process whereby student learning outcomes (SLOs) are identified and mapped across the curriculum, data is collected and interpreted, and changes are made as a result of the findings. Consciously deciding which particular outcomes advisors want their advisees to learn, and then providing evidence that said learning occurred because of advisor efforts, can be challenging. That is where assessment comes in, and this Pocket Guide, developed by NACADA Assessment Institute faculty, is the first of a two-part series that explains the assessment process.
